ABOUT THE ORATOR

Dr. Steve Coppens is a Staff Anesthesiologist at Universitair Ziekenhuis Leuven, Belgium, and Head of the Locoregional Anesthesia Fellowship Program. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in regional anesthesia and perioperative medicine.

He earned his medical degree from the Catholic University of Leuven in 1996 and completed his residency in Anesthesiology at the University Hospitals of Leuven in 2001. He later worked in private practice and at a Level 1 trauma center in the Netherlands, focusing on locoregional anesthesia standards and ultrasound-guided techniques.

Since joining University Hospitals Leuven in 2013, he has served as Clinical Director of Regional Anesthesia and Associate Head of Clinic, playing a key role in developing fellowship and resident training programs.

His PhD research focuses on enhanced recovery pathways and regional anesthesia in thoracic and abdominal surgery. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, received research grants from ESRA, BARA, and BSAR, and serves as reviewer and Associate Editor for leading anesthesia journals, including RAPM.
